Some Remainers have been whining that the so-called Great Repeal Bill will enable the Government to repeal EU legislation by means of the so-called Henry VIII measures, whereby repeal happens automatically without a Parliamentary vote.
The Remainers are out-aged at this loss of democracy. However the Conservative, Labour and Lib-Dem parties were perfectly happy when it happened the other way around.
There are (according the House of Commons Library) 5,155 EU Regulations currently in place. EU Regulations come into force automatically – our Parliament has no vote on them, it cannot amend them, or refuse them.
Our Parliament long ago surrendered the power to legislate to the EU on a whole range of policy areas. It is a bit rich that the same people who were perfectly happy for the EU legislate over them without Parliamentary control now object to Parliament repealing the same laws by a similar method.
But we know that Remainers have no objection to rule by the EU, it is only our power to govern ourselves that they object to.
