Today I have announced my intention to fight Theresa May’s seat of Maidenhead in the General Election.
The UKIP Regional Committee recently invited me to fight the seat and I was pleased to accept. I expect to be formally adopted as the candidate by the central Party tomorrow (Thursday 27th April).
UKIP faces the most difficult and challenging general election of our 24 year history. We are victims of our own success. We achieved the Referendum, and we won the Referendum. Most people now believe (wrongly) that Theresa May intends to deliver Brexit. She doesn’t – she intends to betray it!
Therefore I will be taking the fight to her and I am looking forward to working with the local UKIP branch to achieve the best possible result.
What Mrs proposes in the Government White Paper on our withdrawal from the EU will mean that we will leave the EU in name but not in reality.
At the end of the withdrawal process nothing much of substance will have changed. I look forward to explaining that in detail during the campaign.
I began my political career at the same time as Mrs May when we were both candidates in the Barking By-Election on 9th June 1994. So you might say it is return match – and a grudge match at that.
I have spent my entire political life opposing the European Union, whereas Mrs May has spent her political life defending and promoting it.
Mrs May was a lifelong supporter of the EU, she was an enthusiastic enforcer of EU legislation as Home Secretary (and indeed still is a Prime Minister), she was a Remainer in the Referendum and had Remain won she would be telling us that it was the right decision.
The Tories have betrayed Britain time and time again over the EU since 1972. They are now going to try and do the same thing again. They want to achieve an ‘exit’ where nothing changes very much at all.
I am looking forward to explaining exactly how they intend to do that during the campaign – and to explain how we could leave the EU quickly and completely! Brexit must mean Exit!
