On Monday 4th September in Brussels I attended a near empty committee meeting discussing ‘Strengthening Citizens Rights’.
There was the usual waffle about how to ‘increase democratic participation’, and ‘recommendations’ on such things a digital voting, etc.
All missing the point of course because the EU isn’t democratic in any case.
Let me stress: I don’t believe that the EU can ever be democratic, but if it really believes in democracy it should:
- Allow MEPs to vote to accept or reject individual Commissioners, not just on block as at the moment
- Allow MEPs to propose and repeal legislation (which we cannot currently do)
- Directly elect a President of the EU, and let the EU Government be formed from among the MEPs
It won’t of course because all it is interested in is creating a veneer and illusion of democracy. Which if course is why Britain has to leave.
